It's only just stuck me how few compilations there are around these days, especially when you're talking about electronic music. Only a mere ten years ago compilations were pretty much how you discovered new artists, and now they're few and far between. 'Air Texture Vol.1', curated by Kompakt's Andrew Thomas and Home Normal's bvdub, reminds me of those Merck and Neo Ouija compilations of days gone by, maybe melted together with a few Pop Ambient CDs. It might run a little long at two packed CDs of tracks, but this is ambient music and I'm sure they would have had trouble if Van Wey and Thomas had demanded three-minute tracks from the artist. What we have is a large selection of exclusives from names such as Klimek, Loscil, Oneohtrix Point Never, Wolfgang Voigt, Leyland Kirby, Biosphere and many more. To get all these names on one package is pretty impressive and speaks volumes about the quality of the compilation - it's a fine statement of electronic ambient music in 2011, check it.
