portable - Into Infinity
'Into Infinity' is Alan Abrahams' fifth album as Portable (he's also known as Bodycode), and his first in at least four years. As was hinted with his excellent pair of singles for Perlon, he's moving further towards a high-class fusion of leftfield Pop and Hi-Tech, Afro-rooted House music with this killer album. He's aided by longtime collaborator and co-owner of Süd Electronic, Lakuti aka Lerato Khati, and fellow Berlin resident Efdemin on two tracks, but the main attraction is undoubtedly Alan, from his exquisitely finished production to his increasingly confident vocals, which almost border on Sylvian-esque opulence throughout the set. There's many we won't mention who've attempted this fusion within the modern European House ranks, but usually with dreadfully cliche results, but there's a richly classic sense of soul both to Alan's musicianship and his restrained yet passionate delivery which should serve as an example of exactly how to do this style. Quite simply it's one of the best House albums you'll pick up this year.
