erkin koray - Meçhul: Singles & Rarities
Brilliant retrospective covering the foundational East-West Psyche Rock and Folk fusions of Turkish legend, Erkin Koray. An iconic guitar player and ultimately the father of Turkish rock music - he formed the country's first rock 'n roll group in 1957 - Erkin would later find inspiration from the folk music of Turkey's Anatolian interior, and began mixing these styles with elements of Egyptian and Lebanese music to hatch an unprecedented and unorthodox style known as the Arabesque movement. Erkin would essentially lay the groundwork for artists such as Finders Keepers favourites Baris Manco and Selda, and establish a strong position in the global pantheon of psych-rock pioneers with his epic performances, consistently integrity and work ethic, and most importantly a body of exceptional music. The eleven tracks on 'Meçul' were all remastered from original vinyl from Erkin's personal collection and includes many tracks which haven't previously appeared on Western compilations of his music. They range from the intoxicating, fuzzed-out psych-swirl of the title track through the melancholic ballad 'Kendim Ettim Kendim Buldum', the gobsmacking psych-rock of 'Gün Dogmuyor', the glam punk thrust of 'Krallar' from 1974, and the funky balladeering of 'Olmayinca Olmuyor' circa 1977. For anyone not familiar with his catalogue, or with a yen for the exotic romance of Anatolian psych folk, this is highly recommended.
