First of two collaborative fusions from renowned Scandinavian improv/free jazz trio The Thing (Mats Gustafsson, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten, Paal Nilssen-Love); this one with prolific and hugely respected Japanese guitarist Otomo Yoshihide. The session was recorded live at Pit Inn, Tokyo, by Jim O'Rourke on October 2nd, 2007. So where to start?! These guys are capable of extraordinary feats of musical dexterity and we can safely say they're in acrobatic form here. It's probably a little daft to try and describe this in detail, but basically their taut muscularity and ability to swing from palapable silence to the wildest angular outbursts is something you really should experience before you die. If you think that Free Jazz is just a load of madness, you'd be partly right, but check these guys and you may well be impressed. There's a good reason why the likes of Kieran Hebden, Basement Jaxx, Sonic Youth and even DJ magazine are all big fans.
