Second of two collaborative improv/free jazz escapades from world renowned Scandinavian trio The Thing (Mats Gustafsson, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten, Paal Nilssen-Love); this one featuring the indomitable Jim O'Rourke. They recorded 'Shinjuku Growl' live on 4th February 2008, O'Rourke plays guitar while Gustafsson attempts to perforate your ear drum with shredding alto and baritone sax squalls, all propelled, churned and spiked with the incredible momentum of Haaker Flaten's bass and Nilsson-Love's flailing drums. If you think that Free Jazz is just a load of madness, you'd be partly right, but check these guys and you may well be impressed. There's a good reason why the likes of Kieran Hebden, Basement Jaxx, Sonic Youth and even DJ magazine are all big fans.
