raiden - Beton Armé
Wicked debut LP of brutalist D&B architecture from Offkey label head and notorious DJ/Producer, Radien. 'Beton Armé' follows nearly ten years of Raiden releases for labels such as Renegade Hardware and Position Chrome fusing the disciplines of Techno and D&B into an insoluble form. Located in Tallinn, Estonia, his sound is comparable with other Eastern European producers such as Limewax, Dissident (Kontext) or Current Value, but Raiden's music is still more rooted in a '90s Techno lineage, coming from a time when Techno was more a spirit, rather than a concrete style. Ironically, the title 'Breton Armé' references a style of modernist architecture known for repetitive angular geometries using reinforced concrete. This aesthetic runs throughout the album, from the futurist construction of 'Brutalist', through the complex percussive arrangements of 'Genie Civil', the subbass-immersed envrionments of 'Habitat 67' and the deftly deployed Autechre sample on 'Triangle'. The scope and execution of this album is second to none in his field, fans of modernist D&B need to check it out.
