3:33 (parallel thought) - 333EP-1
What time is it? It's roughly 3:10pm, and we're checking the hotly touted '333 EP1' from the clandestine 3:33 unit. Comprising an unknown number of members and with productions for Tame One and Del The Funky Homosapien to their credit, 3:33 kick back to a time before wonky, before the Beat Dimensions revolution, to a murkier sound equally informed by the crushing drum breakage of DJ Shadow and the ethereal electro-acoustics of Pierre's Henry and Schaeffer. In the current climate the effect of their sharp contrast is raw and refreshing, and could actually be called experimental, rather than experimenting with new plugins. There's a depth and shape to these initial seven tracks which is entirely unique to their productions, from the flaying bite of the MPC-banged drums to the sumptuously dank and clammy atmospheres they're suspended within. The digital bonus is a killer remake of MF Doom's 'Vomit', giving their aesthetic some clear context set against the barbed vowels and and caustic spit drenched lyrics. Like the Odd Future lot, these guys are veering the course of HipHop history in their own way. Fans of DJ Shadow, Mobb Deep, Raime, or Equinox should check this out.
