hauschka - Salon Des Amateurs
Volker Bertelmann has been busy hasn't he? Just months after the release of the luscious, near-orchestral 'Foreign Landscapes' LP, he's ready with yet another full length exploring yet another angle; 'Salon Des Amateurs' still leaves the prepared piano at the centre of Bertelmann's sound, but fleshes it out with rhythms and electronics. You heard me - the soaring cinematics of its predecessor are pushed into a supporting role to allow the percussive talents of Calexico drummer John Convertino and Mum drummer Samuli Kosminen to shine. This rich, rhythmic backbone serves Bertelmann well, and while the clickety-clack of his prepared piano was almost a beat in and of itself, the new parts give a thicker, more structure-oriented focus. There are times when the tracks build into near-jazz, and other when the electronic loops tumble into something close to techno. This is always Bertelmann's record though, and he never lets a knowledge of genre, or desire to incorporate new sounds impinge on his deeply original sonic signature. 'Salon Des Amateurs' is simply another string in his rapidly growing bow, and one that gets two thumbs up.
