the skull defekts - Peer Amid
Well I must say this one was a shock, I've been following Swedish super-group The Skull Defekts for years, and seeing them add arch-weirdo Daniel Higgs to their number was a shock, even taking into account the band's varied history. Since departing Lungfish, Higgs has been travelling down a road peppered with poetry, drone and supreme oddness, so I approached 'Peer Amid' with a tentative ear. Little could have prepared me for the rawk onslaught held within - Higgs is on simply blistering form (best since Lungfish? Definitely) screaming his way through Henrik Rylander and Joachim Nordwall's angular blasts of expertly crafted noise. This isn't the kind of noise I expected from an act who have shared wax with Wolf Eyes (among others) but it's no less abrasive and no less powerful. A million miles away from the lazy stoner dirges and obsession with drone that has plagued the avant-rock scene for nearly a decade, 'Peer Amid' brings to mind a time when rock was about throwing your amps up to eleven and banging the back door off a school bus full of groupies. Someone find me a television, I've got a window that needs to be taught a lesson.
