jean-philippe collard-neven - Fleeting Music
The piano is an instrument that fails to die. Even when its death was heralded in the 80s when the synthesizer became popular, its resurrection came with a zombie-like outbreak and solo piano albums became the norm rather than the exception. 'Fleeting Music' is another solo piano record, but rather than focus on the pretty or shoehorn delicate compositions onto played out field recordings, Belgian composer Jean-Philippe Collard-Neven instead uses the instrument as a tool for his improvisational mind. 'Fleeting Music' is a selection of pieces recorded in March 2009, improvised in a way that he describes as like a musical photograph. Certainly there are elements of the record that could be described as 'beautiful', but that would belie the strength of the album - 'Fleeting Music' is a complex collection of musings on various themes. The selection of notes that Collard-Neven starts with are expanded on and sculpted over time, nothing seems pre-determined and yet the music never feels directionless. Deep, and surprisingly involving 'Fleeting Music' is another heavy hitter for the very reliable Sub Rosa label.
