kisses - The Heart Of The Nightlife
**Includes a free download of 'Other Planets' EP - redeemable from the label** This Los Angeles duo deliver their full-length debut, following on from their widely lauded and much-blogged hazy pop missives 'People Do The Most Amazing Things' and 'Bermuda'. Exhibiting the same kind of songwriting smarts as like-minded contemporaries Delorean, jj and Air France, Jesse Kivel and Zinzi Edmundson also share those acts' bleary-eyed regard for the dancefloor sounds of thirty years or so ago. Cruising through crisp, but nostalgia-tinted productions, the duo serve up some great material here, perhaps most notably the tremendous opener, 'Kisses'. From here onwards there's not a single ounce of flab on the album. Spinning through nine songs in thirty-six minutes Kisses cranks out great cuts such as the C86-goes-Balearic 'Lovers', the hypnagogic hold-music of 'The Heart Of The Nightlife' and old(ish) favourites 'Bermuda' and 'People Can Do The Most Amazing Things', which both make welcome re-appearances. 'Midnight Lover' lays it on a bit thick, and possibly strays too far into Chromeo territory with the lines: "I would like to take you out/For a nice steak dinner/Just me and you", but it still manages to succeed as an improbably straight-faced synth-funk gem. Highly recommended.
