shady bard - Trials
Previously to be heard on Static Caravan, Shady Bard's music is an emotive amalgam of colourful, narrative folk music, post-rock and the sort of lavishly constructed presence a band like Tindersticks summon up. Supposedly the album is inspired by forest fires that ravaged the Peloponese in 2007, and that bleakness seeps into the writing. During 'Night Song' Becko sings: "abandon your hopes and drown in your fears tonight" in a manner that suggests he's rather too pleased about the prospect. He certainly has a knack for gloomy, implicitly gothic, post-folk leanings, yet for much of the time his music is all very uplifting. Laced with strings, horns, multi-layered vocals and soaring guitars, Shady Bard's arrangements find the band functioning as a well-oiled machine, all of which helps make Trials a worthy successor to their Static Caravan debut long-player, From The Ground Up.
