benoit pioulard - Lasted
The third full-length from Benoit Pioulard (aka Thomas Meluch) is another essential journey into the strange musical foothills between the realms of drone and songwriting. Seemingly getting better and better as his career goes on, Meluch sounds like a better writer than ever on tracks like 'RTO' and 'Shouting Distance', calling upon a broadened, more nuanced sound world. During these sorts of moments the Portland-based artist refines his distinctively rustic brand of shoegaze, while elsewhere an abstract piece such as 'Fluoresce' push the envelope a little further, bridging the gap between the troubadour/dronesmith elements of Benoit Pioulard's split personality. Produced in a skillful yet ultimately homely, lo-fi fashion the album conveys the inherently introspective preoccupations of the singer-songwriter all the more successfully for embracing tape manipulations and electronics, supplementing and punctuating the experimental folk of songs like 'Tie' and 'Ailleurs' with haunting sound designs and melancholic textures.
