fabio orsi - Random Shades Of Day
A fantastic triple-disc release from one of ambient music's leading lights, Fabio Orsi. Random Shades Of Day packages together a brand new full-length album, plus two CDs of previously unreleased and out-of-print material from throughout the composer's career, including his debut EP I'm Happy Here, the brilliant South Of Me, Faded On The Blowing Of Winter and 1000 Days Red. This collection portrays Orsi as one of ambient music's most versatile players, freely switching between instruments and compositional approaches, and in so doing finding a broader spectrum of sounds than most. From the chilly ambiguities of something like 'Gate Number' to the more openly sentimental guitar-driven piece 'Tears Not Found', there's much to absorb here - too much material, in fact, to go through bit by bit, but you can expect to hear plenty of previously unheard gems (disc one's tightly condensed 'Fade Again' and disc two's piano and distortion duet 'Radio Passing' being a couple of worthy examples) amongst the sought-after, long-deleted EPs. The third disc houses that brand new album, which divides itself into a four-part narrative that starts out melting together sustained strings and disappearing vocals before settling down to a frozen soundscape of drone, texture and - quite unexpectedly - drumming, that culminates in an effects-saturated guitar, piano and synth coda. Even if you're starting feel a little inundated by the seemingly relentless procession of quality ambient releases coming our way these days, Random Shades Of Day suggests that the field's most talented musicians still have the capacity to re-inject vitality into the genre.
