pontiak - Living
Album number five from Pontiak, Living was laid down on reel-to-reel tape in the band's farmhouse studio. Made up of three brothers based in Virginia, Pontiak fashion an addictive, sludge-leaning brand of classic/stoner rock - all whilst keeping their farm running. While previous album Sea Voids thrived on spontaneity and was recorded over a relatively small number of sessions , Living took four months to make and perfect and the album's overall sound certainly benefits from the attention to detail, characterised as it is by a warm, fudgy guitar tone that could only have come about by analogue means. The saturated tube sounds of Zeppelin-esque opener 'Young' sets the album off splendidly, paving the way for the primitive caveman chug of 'This Is Living', space-rock dirge 'Lemon Lady' and the unplugged psych outing 'Forms Of The', occasionally flirting with amp-quaking interludes like 'Original Vestal' along the way. Living is a real standout set from this trio, and the homegrown sound of the record could hardly have been more characterful or beautifully engineered. Highly recommended.
