47.5 - Warm Sea
Band names with numbers in can often be irritating, but a band name that's nothing but numbers is just off the charts. Somehow, the name 47.5 is made even worse for having a decimal point in it. Presumably there's some sort of numeric relevance to the moniker, but for the time being it must remain a mystery. This Brooklyn-based live/electronic duo are infinitely better than their enigmatic billing, latching beautiful synths and electronic noises to drums (both acoustic and electronic). Warm Sea is a great sounding record too, all captured on a surprisingly hi-fi cassette tape machine. The beats sound crisp and full (particularly on the stomping likes of 'Bouzu Of Japan') and the band's melodic arsenal is put to splendid use throughout with abundant hazy, detuned synth sounds on tracks such as 'Rocky' and 'Chill Ass Out' with a strategic peppering of vibraphone and flute here and there. The end result occasionally sounds a little like Tortoise, though in truth there's not much out there that sounds quite like 47.5. Good stuff.
