neon indian - Psychic Chasms
One of last year's big discoveries, Neon Indian, airs his chillwave masterpiece, Psychic Chasms. While some listeners are likely to start throwing around references to all things hypnagogic, or citing artists like James Ferraro as ports of comparison, Psychic Chasms seems to exist solely as an exercise in great pop music and is far more instantly appealing than its VHS-ripped (possibly) constituent parts might have you believe. Alongside scene leader Washed Out and the more polished, Dilla-influenced sounds of Toro Y Moi, this sample splicing auteur is responsible for some of the most dreamlike and perfectly formed DIY productions of the past twelve months. Cuts like 'Deadbeat Summer' and 'Terminally Chill' should by rights be taking the pop charts by storm - the low-grade synth tactics and hazed-over sonics are really no barrier to just how addictive these strange, nostalgia-lined collages are. Highly recommended.
