high wolf - Shangri L.A
High Wolf is a rising star in the cosmos of loopy kosmiche and hypnagogic drone music alongside peers James Ferraro, Spencer Clarke and OPN. He's responsible for the visceral Iibiis Rouge album with psych hero Neil Campbell (Astral Social Club/ Vibracathedral Orchestra), one of our very favourites this year, besides releases on Not Not Fun and his own Winged Sun label. 'Shangri L.A' is his latest opus, a sublimely mysterious and narcotically affecting collection of tracks for the Japanese Moamoo label, utilising tabla loops and field recorded vibes collected on a month long trip to India to create swelling, chiming, and subtly fluctuating moiré textures with a primal psychedelic potential. Two of these tracks already appeared on the acclaimed 'Gabon' cassette, but the others are brand new compositions, meditating on similarly circular themes of intuitively drifting loops justifiably comparable to the effects of Terry Riley's trancendental intonations or the 4th world limits of Jon Hassell. The comparisons could carry on for days, but like the best of them, his fluidly exotic swirls have a distinct character and fractal genetic makeup which really requires an individual appreciation. Recommended, for your health.
