ten kens - For Posterity
The second album from Toronto-based alt. rockers Ten Kens arrives on Fat Cat, introducing itself with a scrum of distortion and erratic drum rolls on opener 'Johnny Ventura', which seems to feature a lot of open-string guitar bashing punctuated by eruptive, jagged wig-outs. Halfway through, all the noise drops away to reveal a strange, thinned out reverb-laden quiet bit before it all kicks off again. This is a weird first song from a band that seem to revel in the uncategorisable awkwardness of their sound. The bigger picture helps make sense of it all though, casting up hard-riffing chuggers like 'Insignificant Other' and bluesy tirade 'Screaming Viking' whilst also dispensing complex, shimmering baroque rock-out 'Summer Camp' and the extended rockabilly twang-athon, 'Hard Sell'.
