the chap - Well Done Europe
Assembling for a fourth album of irreverent and witty electronic pop music, The Chap have decided to "sell out" according to their (frankly, optimistic) press release. What this band lack in conventional mainstream appeal they more than make up for in terms of angular hooks and all-round sonic invention, as immediately demonstrated by the funny, choppy laptop baroque of 'We'll See To Your Breakdown'. Better still, 'Even Your Friend' chugs along in a pleasingly glitched up new-wave-ish fashion, dropping in a big gospel choir, occasional church bells and a very silly lead vocal during the choruses. Previous single 'Work In Bars' crops up next, sounding like a genuinely punchy, satirical pop hit of the future, before 'Obviously' arrives, sounding a bit like Stereolab having a stab at cosmic disco. Further highlights come from the ridiculous but brilliant 'Nevertheless, The Chap' (featuring some brilliant cut & paste production and great string arrangements) and the vaguely Phoenix-esque AOR-inspired guitar riffing of 'Pain Fan'. Another strong and truly bizarre collection from this singular pop group.
