various / soul jazz - Nu Yorica Roots! The Rise of Latin Music in NYC, 1960's
The third in Soul Jazz's Nu Yorica! series of releases, Nu Yorica Roots! focuses on Latin music in New York during the 1960s, and the resultant melting pot of influences and stylistic hybrids. Featuring the likes of Eddie Palmieri, Ray Baretto, Tito Puente and Joe Bataan, the music collected here incubated in the Spanish district of Harlem, influenced by the new sounds of African-American culture as well as the older traditions of Cuba. This being a roots-themed collection, there's an emphasis on the evolutionary strands and connections between jazz, mambo, bugalu and New York's emerging R&B/funk/soul-inspired Latin infusions, but whether it's the fresh sounds of Palmieri and Baretto or the Afro-Cuban authenticity of Machito, emphatically these are visceral, party and dance themed pieces. In addition to an extensive booklet featuring plenty of liner notes and artist portraits, the disc comes packaged in a slipcase with initial copies supplied with four limited edition postcards.
