various / soul jazz - Rara In Haiti: Street Music of Haiti
Released to coincide with the publication of their superb new book, Kanaval, Soul Jazz present an album of Haitian carnival music, capturing the street-bound Rara bands of Port-au-Princein all their anarchic glory. The music clashes together wild folk singing, percussion and a kind of primal pipe music that fizzes with chaotic energy. There's a pranksterish performance aspect to all this too: apparently, Rara bands roam the countryside accumulating additional members as they go and confronting unwitting passers-by or motorists for payment. As the label would have it: "Traces of New Orleans' Second Line jazz meets Cuban carnival Comparsas and Brazilian afro blocs and the ancient to modern spirit of Kinshasa's Konono no.1 meets the Art Ensemble of Chicago!" Includes sleevenotes by Richard Fleming (author of Walking To Guantanamo) and cover photography by Leah Gordon, the photographer behind Kanaval.
