windsor for the derby - Against Love
US indie survivors Windsor For The Derby are back, releasing a strong new collection of leftfield rock songs with more than a hint of sonic experimentation. The album's title track commences this two-pronged assault with a swelling, dream-pop ambience that has a foot in both camps, stirring up a luxurious blanket of heavy-tog tonality whilst preserving an organic, in-the-room feel. 'Autumn Song' is a more clear-cut venture, unfurling a standout alt. rock number replete with looping, immersive guitar effects and a motoring rhythm section. Reining their sound in even more, 'After Love' is a primarily acoustic number that lays plain the band's seasoned songwriting chops, but it's not long before those nineties shoegaze tendencies start to creep back towards the forefront, with 'Queen Of The Sun' unveiling a textured, slowcore sound. The more exploratory moments tend to be consigned to instrumentals like 'Moon Shadows', but the like of 'Alex Lucero' proves more interesting still, with its pulsing electronic kick, luscious post-rock vibes and reverse-reverbed vocal. There are plenty of compelling pop moments here but Windsor For The Derby keep returning to their experimental roots, and tellingly the album closes with 'Tropical Depression', a straight-up drone that exudes iciness and cold, metallic resonances.
