the ex guitars meet nilssen-love/vandermark duo - Lean Left Volume 1
The billing of this album really tells you everything you need to know about it: the guitarists from Dutch experimental rock band The Ex join up with the regular free-jazz pairing of Norwegian drummer Paal Nilssen-Love and renowned American sax player Ken Vandermark. Oh, and it's the first volume in what might be inferred to be a proposed series. Fans of the artists involved will know exactly what sort of combustive brilliance to expect from the outcome, and as per usual Nilssen-Love proves himself to be one of the most gifted and distinctive voices in improv drumming. Vandermark's presence gravitates towards full-throated, lyrical playing from the get-go of opener 'Left Lung', but by the time guitarists Terrie Ex and Andy Moor show up on Lean Over' the mood shifts into more rhythmic directions, as the two avant-punk string players start laying down solid riffs - something which at first seems slightly at odds with the lyrical, flowing feel of Nilssen-love and Vandermark's work, but transpires to be a healthy mutation of the recording's tone. 'Right Lung' charts the quartet at their most freeform, with all instruments helping preserve an incredibly loose feel over the course of twenty-seven minutes or so. The final track is the shortest: the blisteringly scrappy 'Lean Leftover' which merrily heads in the direction of all-out chaos, only occasionally regrouping for a spot of jarringly funky rhythmic order. Recommended.
