nina nastasia - Outlaster
Outlaster is Nina Nastasia's first solo album since 2006's On Leaving, having shared billing with Jim White of the Dirty Three on the ensuing year's You Follow Me. Outlaster once again sees Nastasia reunited with long-term producer Steve Albini, although injecting new blood into her music are orchestral arranger Paul Bryan and Tortoise guitarist Jeff Parker. 'Cry, Cry, Baby' is a striking opening to the record, getting underway with Nastasia's customary blend of vocals and acoustic guitar before a languid surge of strings strikes up, all recorded with Albini's customarily dry, warm clarity. Now six albums in, Nastasia can afford to indulge in an expanded sound, and the likes of 'You Can Take Your Time' and 'Moves Away' really soar as a result. These rather grand tones shift toward darker climes during 'This Familiar Way' thanks to a more intricate configuration for the strings, which features some magnificently melodramatic violin soloing. 'A Kind Of Courage' is similarly theatrical in its spiralling melancholy, and by this point there's always a danger that Bryan's hugely impressive arrangements might crowd Nastasia herself out of her own songs. Thankfully that tipping point is never quite reached, as underlined by an especially gutsy central performance on the grandstanding 'Wakes' and a tension-building turn on the title-track, which rounds off the album. Outlaster sees a timely shift in dynamics for Nina Nastasia, but everything that's made her work so enduring up to this point remains very much intact.
