joe evans & craig burston - Systems Out Of Chance
*Limited edition cd+dvd set housed in hand screen printed, recycled card sleeves - recommended to fans of the more esoteric end of the Mordant catalogue, Wiliam Basinski and Alva Noto's work with Ryuichi Sakamoto, where the chaos of pure signals is transposed into systematically beautiful music* 'Systems Out Of Chance' is an audio visual CD+DVD collaboration between composer Joe Evans and image maker Craig Burston. The project was initially exhibited at the Parfitt Gallery in Croydon, March 2010, and consisted of six speakers and three portrait monitors "...synched to create an immersive audio/visual triptych born out of a shared love of systems, chaos and the everyday". Using the Fibonacci sequence as a formula to arrange images of lost/found gloves, the pair attempt the timeless feat of creating organised chaos, or systems out of chance, as it were. Musically, this results in a seven pieces for solo piano and electronics, making mathematical sequences sound warm, ethereal and ultimately human, reminding us of Alva Noto's work with Ryuichi Sakamoto, where the chaos of pure signals is transposed into systematically beautiful music. In the accompanying DVD we find Craig Burston's images of discarded gloves made with a camera phone, matching the spare grace of the music with a deft balance of banal and beautiful, where the gloves are transposed into color charts next to to dry descriptions "akin to witness staements or blog tags". The ltd two disc set comes housed in hand screen printed, recycled card sleeves. Recommended to fans of the more esoteric end of the Mordant catalogue or Wiliam Basinski.
