best coast - Where The Boys Are
Recorded last summer, Where The Boys Are (originally released on cassette) preceded Best Coast's ascent to their current position as a major pop threat on the indie circuit, and although now the lineup has doubled with the addition of Bobb Bruno, here the songs are solo vehicles for ex-Pocahaunted star Bethany Cosentino. Across these five half-formed tracks you can hear the foundations for Best Coast's summery pop sound as they're blasted through an ultra lo-fi tape recorder. Upbeat starter, 'Moody' goes down a treat as a tuneful beachside grind, while 'Space Baby' is a little thornier, occupying a sound that might not be too far from certain moments in PJ Harvey's catalogue, although equally, you might find yourself wishing this sort of jagged power chord dirge was what Courtney Love churns out nowadays (as opposed to the silly corporate grunge fodder she's currently flogging). Although from a songwriting and production perspective the band have gone on to more fully realised, catchier fare, this EP still packs a punch, and remains a testament to the fact that you really don't need much in the way of resources to make an impact.
