The sixth release in Jazzman's Holy Grail series, 'Roy Brooks & The Artistic Truth: Ethnic Expressions' is certifiably one of the most coveted and sought-after of all Jazz LPs, with original copies changing hands for over $2500 at auction. Its status comes from a combination of factors; the incredibly adroit ensemble of musicians playing compelling post-Coltrane progressive jazz, the legendary personality of the central figure, and a mythical but ultimately human element that can't be contrived. Brooks was born and raised in Detroit, playing drums from an early age and skilled enough to tour with Yusef Lateef and play with everyone from The Four Tops to Charle Mingus, Chet Baker and Pharoah Sanders before setting up his own ensemble, The Artistic Truth in 1972. With this ensemble he incorporated non-standard instruments like the musical saw and attached vacuum tubes to his drums for that extra melodious thunk. In New York 1973 he recorded 'Ethnic Expressions', a powerful message of black consciousness and spiritual freedom combinging modal, rhythmic and Afro-centric jazz with politics, spirituality and positive vibes. Most of all, this is amazing jazz music that you will feel to the core.
