philippe petit & friends - Silk-Screened
Perhaps most recently known for founding the BiP_HOp label, French artist Philippe Petit flexes his compositional muscles on this release from Mark 'Rothko' Beazley's Trace Recordings imprint, recruiting a vast number of musicians (notably including Graham Massey) on clarinet for a thoroughly dense and complex series of jazz-influenced, highly cinematic pieces. In addition to the sizable ensemble, Petit himself processes acoustic instruments adding turntable noise, field recordings and glass percussion, to the already heavily compacted mixes. This isn't an album to be digested on first listen, but you can certainly immediately hear something very special lurking within the swelling crescendos of 'A Swirling Mix Of Dystopia' and its less chaotic counterpart 'A Swirling Mix Of Utopia'.
