*Full-Length CD edition of this harrowing album, submerged echoes of Wagner recordings and old tape loops creating a dark and unsettling listening experience for fans of David Lynch, Philip Jeck and The Caretaker/Leyland Kirby* For all those who can't or won't play vinyl, Type have compiled this edition of Indignant Senility's somnambulent 'Plays Wagner' volumes. With this project the Portland, Oregon, based artist has shaped a nightmarish sequence of slowly demented wasteland scapes, borrowing from the sampling methods of Phillip Jeck and Leyland Kirby to create a haunting collage of layered sounds that started life as old Wagner recordings. Our protagonist, Pat Maherr, previously split his time between a plethora of monikers, from the chopped and screwed hiphop of DJ Yo Yo Dieting to Sisprum Vish's lo-fi noise, developing the gritty collage sensibility which he's mastered to an impressive degree here. With flickering neon tape loops and vastly layered drones he surveys psy-chromatic mindscapes similar to the Leyland Kirby trilogy, visions of cask-strength industrial ambience punctuated with symphonic sighs and deathly plunges into complete darkness. This is timelessly evocative music, using the doom-laden drama of Wagner's original compositions and the muffled, organically textured camouflage of tape recordings to create hypnotic swells of ghostly resonance which seem to peel away from the record like the dilapidated wallpaper of a log cabin in Twin Peaks. Dry-rotting drones permeate the sound, unsticking the grey sonics from the surface, suggesting the same long-term processes of cognitive decay which the Caretaker applied to his 'Theoretically Pure Anterograde Amnesia', with equal amounts of disorienting effect. The material at the heart of this record seems incredibly remote and spectral, residing somewhere within the muffled hum and warbling pitches of Maherr's discolouring analogue equipment. By the time these recordings reach our ears, Wagner has long since gone and something very dark and elusive has taken his place. Fans of Basinski, Gas, Jeck and Kirby should stop watching Derek Acorah and tune into this... Essential Purchase.
