wiley - Avalanche Music 1: Instrumentals
So, after all sorts of unknown issues leading to this release being pulled at the last minute, we've just had a proper delivery of what is undoubtedly one of the most righteous and inspiring collections of instrumental Grime you'll ever own. What you get for your money here are 22 freezin' instrumentals from Wiley - none of these tracks have officially appeared on CD before, some of them have never been officially available before at all - and the production across pretty much every one of these is terrifying. The set opens with the almost mythically-influential liquid slink of 'Ice Rink' - a proper masterclass in stark reduction which producers like Zomby have studied carefully in shaping their own unique take on electronic production, the rave inciting 'Igloo', sino-Burial tune 'Morgue', the ominous string arrangement of 'Fire Hydrant' and the alien 'Firefly', which is all good in itself, but it's probably the much rarer numbers that'll have you bouncing hoods-up like you just won the lottery. The menacing 'Colder Bass Mix', the lurching 'Born On My Own' and 'Ice Cream Man' are simply ridiculous, genius examples of a style that revolutionised UK underground syncopations over a succession of white labels 12"s back in the early 00's. There's a very good reason why Terror Danjah, Kevin Martin, Kode 9 and a host of leading UK producers cite this man as one of the most important producers of the last decade, and it's all in here. A template setting ESSENTIAL.
