david newlyn, the archivist, insecto - Mobeer 009
*STRICTLY LIMITED TO 275 INDIVIDUALLY NUMBERED COPIES FOR THE WORLD* This epic new edition from the Mobeer camp packs three 3" CDs into a hand-stamped, hand-numbered envelope, with one disc each from UK artist David Newlyn, Chile's Insecto and The Archivist, whom many of you will know as Craig Tattersall, curator of Cotton Goods and one half of The Boats, Remote Viewer and the Moteer/Mobeer labels. Tackling each disc in order, let's first point our ears in the direction of David Newlyn: this ambient soundscaper has been operating via labels like Symbolic Interaction, October Man and U-Cover since 2006, and now delivers a lovely six-part set fashioned from scratchy, windswept field recordings ('Burn All The Letters And Cards'), folky acoustic textures ('Evening Detail') and on the impressive nine-minuter, 'Railways And Stations', a luscious and slow-moving piano-led neo-classical drone workout. Next comes Craig Tattersall's contribution, featuring eight pieces of beautiful, crackling electronic melodies the like of which Remote Viewer and Boats fans will instantly be endeared to. Leading with '(I Did It Deliberately)', Tattersall spins an achingly pretty soundworld from fractured piano phrases, hissing recording debris and deep, analogue bass plunges. The disc unfolds in predictably fine style with a host of flickering, miniaturised beats and subtly detailed textures, all typifying that trademark Mobeer sense of warmth and personality. The final disc, proves to be an especially intriguing set. While Insecto's music is every bit as emphatically 'micro' as that of the other two artists there's a more hi-fi, glitch-centric feel to his music, at times even bringing to mind the classic clicks & cuts era of Mille Plateaux, albeit in a very tuneful sort of way. Here's hoping there's more to come from this South American producer in a similar vein. As you'd expect, this is perilously limited (275 copies), so don't drag your heels on this one...
