sam spence - Sam Spence Sounds
Finders Keepers' Germanic Miner series of "Krautsider Music" captures the wonderful Sam Spence in his charming 70s epoch. Spence was one of a number of ex-pat Americans, alongside David Johnson and Malcolm Mooney of Can among others, to work alongside the original German rock musicians of the Krautrock era. Travelling from California to Paris, where he studied at the École Normale de Musique, he would eventually end up in Munich, the home of national TV studios from whom he earned a handsome crust scoring groovy commercial music for German TV and a series of motivational music for the NFL (we'd kill to hear this!). This enabled him to bring one of the very first Moog synthesizers to Germany, which he used to create a pile of legendary library records for labels such as Dewulfe and Brull, including an LP of entirely electronic music 'The Art Of The Synthesizer'. Many of these themes were widely used in crime thrillers and action films, marking the times with peculiar groovy symphonics which balanced out commercial requirements with a forward leaning and academic background. In time honored style, the FK crew have picked out 26 gems that can't fail to bring a lot of joy into your life, ranging from uptempo funky orchestral themes to pastoral pop and heart-melting Moog experimentation. Nowadays Sam still produces theme music, including credits for The Simpsons, Sponge Bob, FBI's Most Wanted, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and many more, but this is certainly one of his finest collections you're going to find without trawling some serous racks of library wax! Massively recommended!!!
