pietro grossi - Combinatoria
This is the sort of release that Die Schachtel really excel with. Combinatoria is a boxed double-disc edition of the key recordings by Italian electronic composer Pietro Grossi, all lovingly remastered. Born in Venice during 1917, Grossi went on to become an accomplished cellist and visual artist ass well as a composer, eventually arriving at electronic music around the late 1950s before making his mark as the founder of the Studio di Fonologia Musicale di Firenze in 1963. During this time Grossi would laboriously splice tapes and customise machines to help create his first forays into abstract electronic soundscaping. The composer's 1960s output is chronicled on the first disc, taking in contemporaneous works from Grossi's peers, such as Vittorio Gelmetti, whose electronic contributions to the soundtrack of Michaelangelo Antonioni's classic film Red Desert are included. The second disc is no less brilliant, focusing squarely on Grossi's 1970s experiments with early computer music. The twenty-two pieces collected here sound remarkable in their complexity and fidelity, offering a very different range of possibilities to the analogue sounds explored on disc one. A fascinating, engrossing selection of material that sheds some much-needed light on the work of this under-appreciated pioneer.
