skullflower - This Is Skullflower
Having last heard from Skullflower on the terrorising black metal opus Strange Keys To Untune Gods' Firmament, this disc comes as something of a surprise, taking the form of a spacious, improvised set that goes easy on the aural punishment. Perhaps the reason for this discrepancy is that these pieces were recorded back in 1995 with a very different incarnation of the band that not only included Matthew Bower (guitar, piano) and Stuart Dennison (drums, viola) but additional players John Godbert, Russell Smith and Richard Youngs. The very fact that the first track is titled 'Lounge' suggests that the band is very aware that they're going easy on their audience, but by any normal standards this is still fearsome, experimental stuff: 'Creaky Rigging' is a kind of raga-come-sea-chantey, dirging seductively over a quarter-hour or so, while 'Glider' is closer in spirit to mutant free-jazz. It's only really by the time we're stuck into the immense thirty-seven minuter 'The Pirate Ship Of Reality Is Moving Out' that shades of the terrorising guitar ceremonies that were yet to come make themselves apparent.
