xasthur - 2005 Demo
Remastered and newly issued by Hydra Head, this two-track, sixteen minute EP is (as the title itself makes fairly clear, come to think of it) Xasthur's 2005 demo, capturing two early tracks recorded prior to his Subliminal Genocide album. This diminutive blast of black metal malevolence might be tantalisingly short but it's a great calling card for Malefic's take on the Nordic sounds established by Burzum and the like. The production is appropriately sinister and reverently coats the ornate, interlocking guitar arrangements in cheap, trebly technology, producing maximum fizz and unnaturally fast double kick drum work on 'Untitled 5/05'. Excellent stuff as ever from this most reliable and inspired of American black metal auteurs.
