various / strut - Afro-Rock Vol. 1
Having originally surfaced on Duncan Brooker's indie label Kona back in 2001, Afro-Rock Vol. 1 might be cited as a trigger for the resurgence in popularity of African jazz, funk and soul, and certainly contributed to the enthusiasm over a rediscovery and reappraisal of rare, hard to find African music from the '60s and '70s. As Strut points out, this album and records like it represented a first wave of African compilations that transcended the unwieldy, now rather unhelpful 'world music' tags, paving the way for more searching releases such as the Nigeria 70 albums and other similarly incisive landmarks. Out of print since 2002, Strut reissue Afro-Rock Vol.1 with a bonus track: Jingo's 'Keep On Holding' plus new, additional background info, otherwise supplying the release in its original form, complete with Duncan Brooker's original sleeve notes.
