ikonika - Contact, Love, Want, Have
Ever since her 2008' 'Millie' debut, Ikonika has been nurtured as part of the Hyperdub fold. A trio of 12"s for the label have boldly programmed synthetically sweet R'n'B futurism with reinforced UKG and and rugged dubstep, marking her out as an understated but deadly talent. 'Contact, love, want, have' consolidates the developments of those 12"s with reverent nods to boxfresh Juke and Funky, next to the more typical 8-Bit skweee skews and screwed dubstep. Signature tracks like the chromed-out hyper-cruiser 'Fish' and the arabesque 'Sahara Michael' sit next to 'Millie' but it's all about the brace of new stuff like forthcoming single 'Ikonoklast/Idiot'. The former sounds like the soundtrack to an 8-bit footwork dancer on a mission in the land of Zelda, while the latter rattles off a silicon melted Funky killer that's already doing damage in the hands of DJs like Kode 9 and Bok Bok. Meanwhile the sci-fi tension of 'Yoshimitsu' hits a cold nerve of Vangelis style synth flares and 'They Are All Losing The War' runs a killer Drexciyan grime riddim before 'Psoriasis' locks off one of the meanest Funky tracks in the Hyperdub catalogue. There's no f*cking with Ikonika's style, she's producing some of the leanest and hungriest dancefloor tracks around, accelerating herself into the future with a thrilling velocity. Very good indeed.
