andrew thomas - Between Buildings & Trees
Releasing his fourth solo album for Kompakt, Andrew Thomas delivers a new batch of luscious, Pop Ambient style material, this time based upon a process of splicing and editing together old cassette-based sounds and fourtrack noodlings with more explicitly electronic endeavours. In addition to his musical output for Kompakt, The New Zealander has collaborated with Signer and played on the Skallander debut album, released on Type Records. Additionally, Thomas works as a production designer for film and theatre, which is surely something which informs the nature of his recorded work. These deep and immersive compositions are filled with warmth and emotion, unavoidably evoking adjectives like 'cinematic' with their panoramic swathes of hiss and nebulous, suggestively orchestral textures. You can just about discern string recordings buried deep inside 'Moth In Mouth', while 'Above The World So High' and the gorgeous 'Net To Catch A Ghost' are like a more accessible take on the glitched piano dissections of Taylor Deupree & Kenneth Kirschner's post_piano. Thomas' processed instrumental tapestries aren't quite so precise or intensive as the 12k or Raster Noton schools of thought but they do make for an altogether more inviting and wonderfully absorbing exercise in digitally altered soundtrack-style material.
