slow six - Tomorrow Becomes You
Tomorrow Becomes You sees New York ensemble Slow SIx getting back in touch with their avant-rock roots following on from their 2007 release for classical label New Albion and a collection of solo compositions from band leader Christopher Tignor. The complex string arrangements give the album a sense of depth and integrity that distinguishes it from the pack of classical/post-rock crossover recordings. When the drums and cranked amplification drop away there's still so much depth to Slow Six's sound, from the weeping glissandos of 'Because Together We Resonate' to the floating, ambient touches of 'Cloud Cover Part 2'. The more conventional guitar-band elements pull their weight too, however: on the introductory number 'The Night You Left New York' the group lock into sophisticated rhythmic figures, leading up towards an intense crescendo that's reminiscent of the violin strewn peaks hit by the likes of Spokes. Math-rock and prog-like levels of intricacy and busyness creep into pieces like 'Sympathetic Response System Part 1', and at various points you'll find yourself thinking of avant-garde heroes like Tortoise and Rachel's, meaning there's a richness to Slow Six's sound that rewards repeated listens.
