anna kashfi - Survival
A winning collection of melancholic folk songs and achingly lovely arrangements from Manchester outfit Anna Kashfi, who return with their most accomplished and expansive sounding long-player to date. Here the group broaden their scope to go beyond sweetly lyrical Brit-folk to embrace American country/bluegrass sounds ('Red Rag Doll') and more experimental, electronically treated pieces ('String Loop'). Throughout, singer Sian Webley distinguishes herself as siren-like presence in the mix, sailing along a crest of pedal steel and strings on 'A Lonely Place' to heartbreaking effect, and fronting the exquisitely sorrowful 'Glass House' with minimal dramatics but maximum emotive effect. Subsequently, the acappella song 'The Loser' Prize' underlining the versatility of the band's capabilities only for the crackling, warm acoustics of 'Drinker's Song' to lift the sequence back up into the echelons of cinematic lusciousness with its weeping string lines.
