oh no ono - Eggs
Eggs is the second album by five piece Oh No Ono, and their first for The Leaf Label. The record was originally released in the band's native Denmark by the 01-11700170 imprint last spring, so it's taken a while getting over to these shores. The first thing to strike you is just how grand and swollen it all sounds. 'Eleanor Speaks' arrives in a tangle of flurried horn squeaks, Eastern sounding strings and all manner of other epic orchestral gestures. More and more as it unfolds, Eggs transpires to be a tremendous achievement in terms of building sound-worlds. 'Swim' is a little jauntier in its handling of the scale, trimming back the layers for the kooky, pizzicato acoustic verses before going a bit mental for the wall-of-sound choruses. The production is given a grainy, slightly washed out finish that lends the album a somehow even more over-the-top stylised feel. This slightly hallucinatory quality is only exacerbated by the bizarre, elfin vocal style of the frontman: on 'The Wave Ballet' he actually sounds like someone doing a very mean-spirited impersonation of Neil Young, or perhaps a Bee Gee in distress. For all the psychedelic tendencies and soundscaping surrealism going on here, there's a decent showing of soaring pop music on offer, never more convincingly than on 'Helplessly Young' - a thing of ditzy, euphoric loveliness.
