animal collective - Campfire Songs
Since the original Catsup Plate edition of Campfire Songs has now gone out of print, Paw Tracks have opted to reissue Animal Collective's 2003 album so as to keep the music in circulation. It's all a far cry from the technicolour psychedelic wizardry of last year's inscrutable Merriweather Post Pavilion, but Campfire Songs offers an alternate portrait of this most singular of American bands. You'll find no electronics here, instead, these five unplugged songs plunge into a kind of natural ambience. The band (on this occasion without Geologist) setup their equipment on a screened off porch and set about recording a series of pieces that blur the lines between improv and composition, with added birdsong and blustery ambience. This felt like a break from Animal Collective's run of form first time around, but in 2010 it's like listening to an entirely different group of musicians altogether. The flowing acoustic looseness of 'De Soto De Son' and 'Moo Rah Rah Rain' represents an important part of the band's creative essence and only goes to illustrate how experimental and bold they can be, even when stripped to their essence, bereft of sequencers and production tricks.
