september collective - Always Breathing Monster
Their second release for Mosz finds September Collective working with a MIDI-fied church organ. The musicians (Stefan Schneider of To Rococo Rot, Barbara Morgenstern and Paul Wirkus) planned to capture the impressive resonance of the organ at the Johannes Church in the centre of Dusseldorf, feeding it pre-prepared MIDI arrangements which were then captured by various microphones set up within the space. Presumably the resultant recordings have been processed, edited and manipulated subsequently, because the end product is a rather magical one, full of rich, location-specific noises and the central paradox of a vast, beautiful and acoustically instrument being made to perform such strange mechanical tasks, often resulting in bloopy phrases that are hardly very church-like. A piece like 'Amorosa' presents an interesting combination of these organ noises with piano performances from within the same space, establishing a uniquely beautiful relationship between timbres, the like of which couldn't be properly emulated by reverb plugins and the like. Lovely.
