Honest Jon's present the natural successor to the 'The World Is Shaking' and 'Marvellous Boy' comps, with the 'Africa Boogaloo' primer on the "Latinization" of musical evolutions in post-colonnial West Africa. Drawn from extremely rare records, this compilation traces the incorporation of Latin sounds from the Caribbean into the the music of Ghana, Benin, Nigeria and Senegal in a timeless double refraction of ideas between the nations of the Black Atlantic. As music imported from Cuba became increasingly popular in West and Central Africa, there was a noticeable trend of musicians changing their name to give a more Latin flavour, like Sierra Leone's Gerald Pine switching to Geraldo Pino, and Congo-Brazzaville's Jean Serge Essous renaming himself Jerry Lopez, while others would compose songs in Spanish or even "...nonsense that sounded like the real thing". The resultant sound is a potent concoction of sounds, all rooted in Africa, but given new accents and bolstered by the sense of post-collonial freedom, from the ebullient sound of Le Grand Kalle, Don Gonzalo and Manu Dibango's title track, to the Rumba rooted syncopations of Pierre Tehana & Orchestre Poly Rythmo's sublime 'Il N'Est Jamais Trop Tard'. As always with Honest Jon's releases, the production values are reassuringly lavish and the music within just craves to be cherished. Amazing.
