various / sublime frequencies - Siamese Soul: Thai Pop Spectacular Vol. 2 (1960's-1980's)
Mark Gergis and Alan Bishop of Sublime Freqencies finally deliver a hugely welcome follow-up to the 'Thai Pop Spectacular 1960s-1980s' with 15 tracks of mindblowing exotic soul. As anyone who witnessed their DJ sets or followed this series will attest, these guys have a deadly ear for a groove, again pulling out unimaginable variations and charmingly off-kilter permutations of disco, pop, soul and funk filtered through the unique Thai character that connects so well with Western sensibilities. For example Daw Bandon's 'Bong, Oh Bong' espouses a sentiment set to folksy grooving soul that we can all agree with, stating something along the lines of "it doesn't matter if I don't have a girlfriend, as long as I have my bong and marijuana", well sometimes anyway. When the opening bars of Kwan Jai & Kwan Jit Sriprajan's 'E-Saew Tam Punha Juajai' kick in, you'd be forgiven for thinking this was a prime Detroit soul cut circa 1968, but get quickly ripped into another reality when the unmistakably Thai vocals croon in, a trick that never manages to lose its shock value throughout the fifteen tracks on offer. We shouldn't really spoil the surprise of the treasures lying inside, just take it on trust from the Sublime Frequencies crew that just like the rest of their catalogue, this delivers an immensely satisfying and exhilarating listen.
