It really doesn't seem to matter who the artists are, DiN releases all sound very much as though they're from the same stable. The often rather old-fashioned approach to synth-spawned ambience encroaches on fusty new-age-isms which once seamed irredeemably old hat, and yet next to the likes of hipper bongo bashers like White Rainbow it starts to make a little bit of sense. Well, sort of. This new Nordic entry onto the DiN catalogue is more successful than most too. Inevitable comparisons to Biosphere (and possibly Thomas Koner) crop up not entirely unjustly, and the only real downside is the occasional flapping of slightly archaic, undiscerning percussion. Despite this, Arcadia Borealis is probably the first release on the label for some time that stands any real chance of appealing beyond the established fanbase. Wøllo and Wösteinrich devise sonic atmospheres designed to evoke the sense of wonderment and trepidation of a polar environment as would have been experienced by 18th century explorers. The ultimate effect of these sound designs is a generally very favourable one, offering plenty of density and texture to immerse yourself in, and the pictorial accompaniments on the sleeve signpost the occasion nicely.
