garden - Round & Round
Do you remember psychey pop also-rans Simian? Yeah I do too... sort of, I seem to remember they were advertised a lot more than they probably sold, but all the same, they were quite good too. Well Simon Lord, ex frontman of said band is back with a new album for one of our favourite British labels, the lovely Static Caravan and I can reveal that it's a bit of a stunner. Static Caravan seem to be pursuing the nu-folk sound with all their might, and avoiding the slightly spannered freak folk of labels such as Fonal and Digitalis for a more classic, a more British sound. Lord's 'Round & Round' sums up this sentiment absolutely and sounds like it could have easily dropped out of the musical bush in 1974 as easily as it could have come out today. The recording quality is decidedly old fashioned, the instrumentation is beautifully 'classic' and the songwriting, the cover, everything suggests that it's a long forgotten acid folk masterpiece that someone pressed up 50 copies of and left in charity chops across England. Just flick over to 'Yew Tree' for the best example of this, its is a track that really should be a hit single if there was any justice in the world (newsflash : there isn't) and sums up Lord's skills in one bitesized chunk. If you got chills hearing Tunng's incredible debut 'Mothers Daughter and Other Songs' then you're bound to enjoy the flute-drenched folk loveliness of 'Garden'.
