css - Cansei De Ser Sexy
They didn't have to try hard this lot, I shoved the cd rudely into my player flipped over the disc case and quickly noticed that they had titles such as 'Music is my Hot Hot Sex', 'Let's Make Love and Listen to Death From Above' and 'Meeting Paris Hilton' and I knew I was onto a winner. Then on opening the cd up and seeing a photo of CSS I realised they are mostly ladies, and rather attractive ones at that... well that's this review sorted then eh? CSS are from Sao Paulo, Brazil and are apparently the first South American band signed to Sub Pop, and 'Cansei de ser Sexy' is Portuguese for 'Tired of Being Sexy', so clearly these lasses know what the score is, and of course, as soon as sound begins to blare out of my headphones with the first track 'CSS SUXX' it's pretty certain that they've got an attitude and a sense of humour that they ain't afraid to use. Coming across like a peculiar combination of Goo era Sonic Youth, Human League, Blondie and 90s bubblegum DIY-kids Bis, there's something perfectly right about CSS's punk-funk stylings, sidestepping any faux-pop posturing and instead deciding to massacre tradition with large pointy sticks. Just head over to the violent 'Artbitch' which features the winning line "I am so hardcore, I sell my crap and people ask for more..." - how ace?! It stands to reason that the album opens with 'CSS Suxx' - once you've done yourself down, you can get on and massacre the rest of the world. Crazily good fun.
