luciano - Tribute To The Sun
To our knowledge, this is only Luciano's second full length studio album to date, but unapologetically this guy is really a singles man, serving up some true classics of the minimal genre. For 'Tribute To The Sun' he's put together a cohesive set of groovy dance tracks balancing out his lean but supple rhythms with vocals from Martina Topley-Bird, Keren Ann and Ali Boulo Santo matched by bright Latin instrumentation and sophisticated electronics. 'Los Niños De Fuera' might be his answer to Villalobos' 'Enfants', using hypnotic chants to suck you into his rhythm, while the lilting percussive arrangements of 'Sun, Day And Night' use Topley-Bird's cottony-soft vox to great effect without resorting to the usual kick drum underlay. Arguaby though, the best cuts are instrumental, like the fragile 'Conspirer', or the tricky intricacies of the 10 min + 'Metrodisima'. Very good indeed.
